The Harms of Being Woke (2/3)

For our 2nd lecture on woke, this one is related to woke’s cousin, cancel culture.

We briefly discussed what canceled is on the first part, but let’s widen that one on this post. If someone is ‘canceled’ (mostly a famous influencer and a bigshot celebrity) it means they (the person and the career) are done for- canceled.

This uprises the term “Cancel Culture” as best said by Merriam-Webster “Practice or tendency of engaging in mass canceling as a way of expressing disapproval and exerting social pressure” How will one get canceled if they’re airing out their personal opinions and is on the right path?

Simple, it’s a different path. Different mindset. Different perspective.

While some get some simple sometimes failed “ratio” some experience more, from death threats, personal and privacy invasion, to as dangerous as online doxing. So here, let’s explore some of the harms of being woke on the internet.

  1. Death threats and Harassments
-Unfortuntely, this is the most common form of the ‘intensive’ measures of harm. Through private messaging and possibly even in public, people will send below the belt and seriously harmful words to a person.

2. Contacting loved ones, family members, friends
-Again as someone who spends most of their time on the internet, there have already been multiple instances where a person will go in-depth on the other’s profile and look for their loved ones and contact them instead. In fairness, some of them do deserve it (A minor, scammer) But still, it’s terrifying that people will go through lengths (and maybe not even) just to touch upon people’s personal lives

3. Doxing
-Let’s first familiarize this term. Doxing is releasing the private and personal information of someone to use it maliciously. These pieces of information mostly include but is not limited to: Addresses, phone numbers, plate number (If they have a car)

This does not need to be said more. This is particularly more common to BIPOC. Aside from the topic of wokeness, doxing was also used to traffic people.

All in all, it’s best to say, that the internet is truly not the best.
